Foggen International WaterMist System - foggen

  • Foggen WaterMist for Buildings

foggen watermist for buildingDue to their restrictions against the use of gas and chemicals, the maritime trade has used watermist fire suppression systems for many years because of it's effectiveness with minimal water usage. Although watermist is relatively new to land based installations, it has become increasingly more common in the last few years as an alternative to conventional sprinkler systems.

Is watermist approved for all types of buildings?

Prevent Systems has supplied watermist systems to most types of buildings. Documentation for the tests taken show our systems to be as good or better than the reference traditional or residential sprinkler system. This includes domestic & residential, LH, OH-1, OH-2. Also some OH-3 applications with some restrictions. Currently, we have not tested for storage applications.

Is watermist effective in large open rooms with good ventilation and or drafts?

We have undergone large scale fire testing in fire labratories both in Norway and abroad. All tests proved our watermist systems to be effective in open spaces - public space tests and parking garage tests.

Does a watermist system qualify for a reduction on insurance policies?

Normally insurance companies grant the same rebates as for sprinkler systems, but this is to be detemined between the owner and the insurance company. One could argue for a better rebate since the water damage from a potential fire would be signifigantly less.

Our documentation show that our systems control and suppress a fire as good or better, but with significantly less water than traditional sprinklers.

What are researchers saying about watermist?

The benefit of watermist as a suppression tool is it's minimal use of water. Watermist is befitting for buildings of historical value. Additionally the installation technology allows the watermist system to be directly hooked up to existing water sources in older buildings. Watermist research has achieved an automatic suppression system that engages at the onset of fire. In retirement/convalescent centers where help is critical for patient mobility, watermist is considered a good alternitive to other fire security devices because it begins suppressing the fire at the absolute most critical time allowing a better chance of survival.

Does watermist have it's own set of standards to meet?

There is not one common international standard for designing, installing and maintaining watermist systems for land-based applications yet, however, there is an European standard in the works, TS 14972. Watermist test standards that have been published normally require fire testing showing equivalence to conventional sprinkler systems. Systems are tested for different applications, including domestic & residential, commercial and industrial. The tests must be performed at an accredited fire laboratory, and the test documentation lays the foundation for the design, installation and maintenance manual for the watermist system. Designers and installers must have required approvals from Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) to work on automatic suppression systems.

What is the installation cost comparison between watermist systems and traditional sprinkler systems?

There is no straight answer since it would obviously vary greatly from project to project.

However, the primary factors that allow a watermist system to be the more cost effeceint solution is the smaller pipe dimensions which also make for a simpler and faster installation. In addition, the ability to connect to an existing water supply for existing buildings, or a smaller intake for new building connections certainly reduce costs. Higher quality piping such as stainless steel could cause an increased cost. As well as a system requiring it's own water pump and tank.
